Chinchillas need a regular diet of chinchilla pellets and meadow hay. It is important to locate a quality source of pellets manufactured especially for chinchillas. Do not use rabbit pellets they often contain hormones that are harmful to chins. An adult chin needs about 40 grams per day. A good source of hay is important also, and should make up about half of the daily food intake. Ensure the hay is fresh and has been stored in the dry. Damp hay quickly becomes moldy. There is no point in drying damp hay, you will only be feeding your chin dry mouldy hay!

Blocks of compressed Alfalfa are available in the UK, but should only be given in small amounts as a treat. They are very rich in this form and not a substitute for fresh hay. Treats can be given daily BUT must only be given in moderation or you will upset the delicate balance that exists in the chins digestive system. Chins love a raisin, or a small slice of peeled apple, and one of these is the maximum per day. Do not feed them pellets that contain extras, seeds etc only use plain pellets, so you know exactly what they are eating! Do not feed them any form of nuts, the fat builds up in the chins body, with no release.

Always change over from one source of Pellets to another gradually. Even when opening a new pack of the same brand, mix in some of the new with the last of the old.
This will prevent a shock to the chins delicate digestive system when the balance of ingredients in their food changes.
