Chinchillas need daily exercise to stay healthy, and enjoy a daily playtime
outside the restrictions of their cage. Chins love to chew everything,
especially wood and plastics, so valuables in need of protection should
be out of harms way before exercise time. They can remove the plastic
insulation from electric cables and wires in an instant, ensure there
are no cables in the play area!
A dedicated chin play space is the best option, if possible. Do not walk about the play area during exercise time, this is very dangerous, chins move quickly and change direction without warning. The bathroom is not a good choice for chin play, they easily slide on the smooth surfaces and fall into basins!
If you have a single chinchilla play time can be essential to the animals' well being. Left on their own they can get very depressed, it depends on the temperament of the animal. They usually need daily contact with their owner, and over a period of time the owner becomes a replacement for their missing mate.
