Chins love to take a bath in specially prepared volcanic dust, placed in a metal tray. They jump in and after scratching around, will roll over and over to work the dust into their coats. Opinions vary about how often to bath a chin. In the English climate 3 or 4 times a week seems to be sufficient. They need 10 to 20 minutes in the bath, beware of extending this they can overdo it and get too much dust in their eyes and ears! Some will have had enough in less than 10 minutes. The dust can be sieved to remove fur and re-used. When the dust appears dirty or lumpy replace it, we replace all dust at monthly intervals, as a safeguard.
You should keep one dust tray per cage and not mix them up to help prevent the passing of infections etc from one cage to another.

Do not try to wash your chinchilla in water, you will end up as wet as the chin, and they can easily catch a chill from being wet. If this does happen they must be quickly dried with a towel, and kept at room temperature until dry.

Metal oven roasting trays make good dusting trays for chins. Don't use the non-stick coated type, the chins would chew off the coating, look for a plated steel finish, and ensure all edges are smooth.
They can be esily washed also. Round trays tend to cause problems with over-enthusiastic chins.
